Konga — Yirgacheffe, Ethiopia
PRODUCER PROFILE
Konga Washing Station
One of the senior names in Ethiopian specialty coffee, Konga sits in the southern Yirgacheffe woreda, perched at 1,950–2,100 metres above sea level on the slopes of the Ethiopian highlands. The washing station processes coffee from a network of more than 1,200 smallholder farmers, most cultivating less than half a hectare each, in the gardens around their homes.
The place
Yirgacheffe is the southernmost of Ethiopia's recognised specialty regions and arguably the most famous. The terroir is unrepeatable: high altitude, mineral-rich volcanic soils, dense forest canopy that filters the equatorial light, and a long cool growing season that lets cherries ripen slowly. Coffee here grows in what Ethiopian agronomists call "garden coffee" — not on plantations, but mixed in with bananas, false bananas, and shade trees in the gardens of village smallholders.
The variety
What's labelled "Heirloom" on a bag of Ethiopian coffee is shorthand for an extraordinary genetic complexity. Ethiopia is the birthplace of Coffea arabica, and the country contains the wild gene pool from which every other arabica variety in the world descends. A typical Heirloom lot may contain 50+ distinct landrace varieties, mixed in the same coffee gardens for generations, never formally identified or named. The result is a complex, layered cup that defies neat varietal description.
How the lot is processed
Konga produces both washed and natural processed lots. Our current lot is fully washed: cherries are pulped within 12 hours of delivery, fermented under water for 24–72 hours, washed thoroughly, then sun-dried on raised African beds for 12–18 days. The washed style is what Yirgacheffe is most known for — it produces the clean, jasmine-and-bergamot profile that defined how the world hears the word "Yirgacheffe."
Why we work with Konga
Konga is one of the few Ethiopian washing stations where lot traceability is reliable down to the village or kebele level. Each delivery batch is recorded by farmer; final lots are aggregated by quality grade rather than indiscriminately mixed. For a buyer who cares about specifically where a cup comes from, this is the difference between origin coffee and origin theatre.
